A knowledge base for cyanophage and cyanobacteria project has been initiated.
This is for the purpose of sharing information among collaborators and the scientific community.
All the data that will be generated in the laboratory will be compiled,
analyzed and posted on this cyanogroup knowledge base site. Major features of the site include (1) Literature database; (2)
Genomic database; (3) Data analyses - both DNA sequence and phylogenetic analysis and (4) Related links for the cyanogroup.
The cyanogroup genomic knowledge base would provide DNA sequence analysis
tools for users to search and query any related information stored in the database. Sequence analysis program designed specifically
for DNA sequence analysis will be incorporated into the website. After input of the query sequence by the user, the analysis
program would automatically start the DNA sequence analysis, perform BLAST searches against the local database, and then return
the final results to the user. The local database of the knowledge base contains genomic information of cyanobacteria and
cyanophages, including two major parts, the NCBI genome database and laboratory sequencing data. This provides users with
efficient search information in one location without the need to reference other websites or databases. The site provides
a virtual laboratory for scientists who study marine and freshwater cyanophages and cyanobacteria. It also enhances our understanding
of the relationship among cyanophages and cyanobacteria including their phylogenetic relationships. Regular information update
of the local database will be performed to maintain the high accuracy of the analysis and BLAST search.
